There is a way of seeing Porto that most visitors never find.
Let me show it to you.
A half-day photography walk with a photographer who has spent years learning this city; its light, its stone, and the people who fill it.
Most photographs of a place lose the light and vibrance of the city. Yours don't have to.
You have felt it, I am sure. You go somewhere that moves you, you take a great many pictures, and later they turn out to be documentation rather than memory. The images show where you stood, not what it felt like to be there; and by the time you look back at them, or share them with the people you love, they have gone flat. They prove you were there. They have lost how it felt.
I have spent my life learning to close that gap, and in half a day I can teach you my methods. Not with a better camera, or presets and filters, but with new ways of seeing: how to find the light that is already doing the work; how the city composes itself when you shift a step to the side; how to wait for the moment the moped speeds into the frame; why a single face, with one smile, can hold the whole feeling of a place. All you will need is the camera you already carry, and you will come away making photographs that keep the feeling of the place, not just the facts of it.
The City
Porto is one of the finest teachers I have ever had, and I would like to introduce you.
I have walked this city for years and it has never stopped teaching me. It rewards a patient eye like almost nowhere I have known. The light comes low and gold down the granite in the mornings and the late afternoon, as if it were looking to share its history in every chiselled mark. The city rises high above its river in multicoloured tiles and terracotta, washing lines strung between the iron terraces, the water below holding it all a second time in its calm reflection. And the people are not merely subjects for a snapshot; they are the most compelling thing here: the man in the doorway who has run his café for forty years, with the easy smile and the kind laugh; the women watching over the neighbourhood from their window perches; the tiled saints keeping their eyes on the lane. Every corner is already composed, waiting for an eye to see it. The work is only in learning to notice, and to know the moment to capture it.That is what we do together. We'll move through the city's most iconic corners, the tiled halls of São Bento, the ironwork of the Dom Luís bridge, the quiet stonework of the Sé do Porto, not to check them off a list, but to teach you to actually see them. I will show you the Porto that does not fit on a postcard.

Hello, I'm Scott. I make photographs, this city is my home, and it would be my privilege to show you both.
I started Porto Photo Walks for a simple reason: I kept meeting visitors who left Porto with hundreds of photographs that didn't hold on to how the city actually felt. I know that gap well, closing it is most of what my own photography has spent years trying to do, and I wanted to teach the closing of it, not just talk about it.I am a fine-art photographer; though I do enjoy colour photography, my own work is a body of black-and-white pictures made solely here in Porto. I came to photography the long way round: through architecture, drawing, printmaking, and the theatre; and the single thread through all of it was learning to see before the camera was ever lifted.I should be clear about one thing: this is not the kind of walk where I lead you between monuments and tell you when each was built. Instead, we walk the city and learn to see it in a way that will not fade the way memory does. You will learn to capture the moments of your stay so that they stay with you, long after you have left.
What
we do
An unhurried half-day with a small group, walking slowly enough to see Porto properly, and to bring more than pictures home.
We meet in the heart of the city and we walk slowly, stopping often. As we go I will teach you five ways of seeing that will change every photograph you make afterward: how to find the light; how a scene composes itself, its structure; how to decide what a photograph is truly about, its subject; how to wait for the moment; and how to know afterward which frames hold the meaning.We walk, we talk, we compare what we found, we enjoy the day. It is good company, in a small group of six at most, over about four hours: a day out full of insight and memory that just happens to leave you a better photographer.You need no particular camera; bring what you have, a real one or your phone, whichever you are most comfortable with. Beginners are welcome, but for the best experience you should already be comfortable with your own camera or phone's basic settings, how to set exposure, focus, that kind of thing.

What you learn here does not switch off when our day ends, or when your flight lands.Some ordinary evening, weeks from now, you will be walking a street you know by heart, and the light will do something on a wall, and you will stop, because now you have learned to see it. For a moment you will be back in Porto, in the day you learned that the world is an ever-changing composition of moments and light.That is what you are really taking home. Better photographs of this trip, certainly: ones that look the way it felt, the ones you will want to show the people you love. But beneath them, a way of seeing the whole world, and that is yours to keep. It is my hope that it will send you back to this city every time you use it.Most souvenirs end up in a drawer. This one you carry with you always.
The walks
The Workshop: €175
€135 for the first ten bookings, while I gather the first reviews. €175 after that.
The whole of it, in one half-day: all five ways of seeing, out in the city, in a small group of no more than six. About four hours on foot, in the best light of the day. If you have a few days in Porto and want to go home with photographs that mean something, and a skill you keep, this is the one.
Departs 9:00 AM, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
The Private Walk: €225
€275 for two, bring a partner and share the experience.
The same half-day, shaped entirely around your own eye and the pictures you most want to make. Both are prepaid, and the moment your payment lands I will send you where to meet me, a map, and a short note on what to bring and what will be on the agenda. Then you need only come and and see the city with me.
FAQ
What do I bring? Any camera, or your phone. Good walking shoes, a snack and some water.Do I need experience? You don't need photography experience, but you should already be comfortable with your own camera or phone's basic settings, exposure, focus, white balance, that kind of thing. This walk is about learning to see, not about learning your gear, and time spent troubleshooting settings takes away from everyone else's experience. If your camera is new to you, spend an evening with the manual before we walk, it makes a real difference.What if it rains? Bring an umbrella and we walk; rain in Porto is beautiful and can be sporadic. It also makes for photographs that share another side of the city's character. Only in truly severe weather will I move a walk, and you never lose your place.How much walking? About four hours, on hills and cobblestones, at an easy pace with plenty of stops.Language? English.Can a companion come who won't photograph? No. These walks are built around hands-on teaching I've spent years developing, and it wouldn't be fair to the people who've paid for that attention to share it with someone who hasn't. If your companion wants to join, they're welcome to book their own place.If plans change? Full refund up to 48 hours before; inside that, your place may be passed to someone else.
